No Drilling Lethbridge:
In 2014, Goldenkey Oil Inc. proposed a project to drill for oil and gas within Lethbridge city limits. If such a project was proposed during your term on council, what would be your position?

A

Burke

Answer

I agree with the previous council’s decision to oppose drilling for oil and gas within the municipal boundaries of Lethbridge. Such activities in, or near, residential areas was widely opposed by the Citizens of Lethbridge, and poses unnecessary risks in our community.

J

Coffman

My position would remain as it was in 2014: I am opposed to drilling for oil and gas anywhere within our municipal boundary and I am opposed to any new drilling within the borders of the area covered by the inter-municipal development plan that we share with Lethbridge County.

B

Crowson

Answer

While I personally am opposed to drilling within city limits, council and the City would have to investigate what options (if any) we have in preventing such a proposal and would then have to evaluate the proposal.

C

Germshied

Answer

I would not support the development of these industries in city limits as the prices we would pay such as lower property values, possible physical dangers, and visual appeal would out weigh the benefits it would give.

Gibb

R

Hoffarth

Answer

I am greatly concerned about any project that has such a potential downside for our environment and public health. However, I was not party to the proposal and I am loath to simply say no without reviewing the proposal and understanding the implications of saying yes or no.

I am not in favour of drilling for oil and gas within the City of Lethbridge limits.

J

Pogorzelski

Oil spills can be devastating to any community, fracking is not perfect and if there is even a .1 percent chance that a spill could occur within our city, I do not support it.

L

Saloff

Answer

NO

J

Shackleford

Answer

I would protest with all the people that signed the petition against drilling. Stand in front of heavy equipment, defy blockades, grill our MLA's and Resources Minister if they showed up!! City Council writing a letter was a necessary step but not all that effective. Politicians understand "activism" and it is our duty as citizens to remind them of that every so often.

C

Spearman

Answer

I would oppose the plan, as I did in 2014 taking action to meet with the provincial government. I proposed a motion, supported by Lethbridge city council and subsequently approved by the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association that the Municipal Government Act be changed to give municipalities greater say over drilling activities proposed to take place within their boundaries.

J

Takahashi

Answer

I am emphatically opposed to all urban drilling.

B

Thurber

Answer

I would not support this project. On the previous request the Citizens of Lethbridge were very clear on their feelings on this matter. loud and clear.

S

Watson

Answer

In a word, no. That is due to lack of research on fracking operations and their consequences to the environment and cities surrounding it. The literature surrounding fracking and oil extraction has showed negative impacts on various fronts, and this would not be in the best interest of our community as a whole.

R

Woss

Answer

Urban fracking has no place in our community - we are living in a drought zone where water is scarce & droughts are frequent. We should not put our water at risk for the sake of fracked gas. We can safely and responsibly create energy with renewables. That’s the direction I would like to see us take.
