Burke

Answer

As successful or aspiring businesses, what has paved the road to your success? What challenges have you encountered and how could the regulatory processes in place within the city been simplified? What processes have worked in other municipalities that should be adopted here? I look forward to learning more and advocating for a stronger base of businesses in our community.

The City of Lethbridge is a vibrant, multicultural community with a diverse economy and a skilled and well educated workforce. When combined with a superb geographical location, rich agricultural lands, first class educational institutions, healthy environment, good infrastructure, the rule of law and a stable political environment make this city a great place to do business.

Answer

First off, know that I believe that Lethbridge is a tremendous place to do business and raise a family. We have great amenities here and I think it's going to get even better. I would also invite businesses who have major concerns to let me and other councillors know what those concerns are so that we can have a great discussion about them.

Answer

Council has actively worked to ensure Lethbridge is 'business friendly', and has included strongly worded statements in our strategic plan such as: 1. Encourage private investment and promote a corporate culture that does the same. 2. Enrich the city as an exciting and active place to live, visit and do business. 3. Consider ways to streamline city processes and make them more business-friendly 4. Increase our engagement and consultation with the business community 5. Actively encourage a cooperative approach in the community for tourism initiatives 6. Lead the development of a tourism strategy

Answer

As our city approaches 100,000 residents, issues become more complex and demands become more significant. In the face of rapid growth, an increased debt load and administration changes, we need Councillors who understand their legislative roles and responsibilities to make effective multimillion- dollar decisions. We need Councillors who understand that City Council governs City Hall. We need Councillors who understand Good Governance because Good Governance leads to strategically focused services and facilities provided to you with efficiency, open dialogue, and with attention to our limited resources.

We need to continue to be an attractive and desirable place for companies large and small to do business. Lethbridge has been named as one of the best places to do business in Canada, and city council needs to make sure that this stays the case. Council needs to work productively, effectively and sustainably with our business communities, and provide ways to continue to be an attractive environment for them to thrive.

Answer

My message would be - we are very appreciative of your willingness to "set up shop" in Lethbridge and we are more than thankful for the job opportunities you provide for the residents of our city. The businesses you run provide us with an easy access to the products and services we are in need of thereby ensuring that we do not need to travel to larger centers to satisfy our shopping needs.

Politics and business are two separate worlds for good reason. Often they overlap in partnership, and sometimes in the worst way possible, overlap in corruption. To keep these worlds separate but enable these worlds to operate together in the best interests of the People is what I am interested in.

Answer

You work hard for your money and your taxes should be an investment, if not then it must change. Economic development is a process and it is certainly not an entity that the city or businesses can go to and turn on a spout to get more. Growth in our local businesses and attracting new business will follow when taxes provide good-value for services and when the regulatory environment is clear, fair and open to review. Times and circumstances change and so regulations must be able to meet the change in conditions.

Having owned and operated multiple business in the community for close to 30 years, I have experienced success and have also taken some hard knocks. I have worked hard for what I have, and for that, I truly understand the value of a dollar. I will continue to represent the small business voice in Lethbridge, and continue to support and advocate for our business community at the local, provincial, and federal levels.

I want the business community to know that I admire your courage and tenacity and appreciate your contributions to this city. It is said that you can't fight city hall but I don't think you should have to. If we are doing something that's not working for you then come and talk to us. We are all in this together.

Answer

Your voice is important to me and you are the biggest player in the success of the growth in our city. I strongly believe we must open the "doors" at city hall and engage every aspect of our community in charting the path for future vision and growth. We constantly hear the needs and wants from the special interest groups, organizations and agencies but we don't seem to have open, regular discussions with the groups that make our community click; the business community, the builders, the industrial and commercial sector. You are the ones I want to hear from on a regular basis.

While I come from a public service background, I am well aware of the risks made and the importance of private business/industry in our community. My commitment is to be in consultation with the business community as a councilor. In my view, excellent communication is key to any successful relationship. I believe that our business community makes our community vibrant. I would look forward to learning much about our business community and taking time to understand the unique nuances of Lethbridge's entrepreneurs on the way to a partnership with City Council that continues to develop Lethbridge into a world class city. There is great potential here!

The City of Lethbridge values the role businesses play in the community and they should feel confident that City Council will always be willing to listen to their concerns and ideas.

H

Answer

I want to see the City be more sensitive and realistic toward the needs of the business community. Land use, bylaws, and regulations need to address the needs for the business sector. Business should be welcome to come to the City with the concerns and ideas and NOT have to wade through "red tape". The City needs to realize the tough economic times we are experiencing and consider tax incentives and breaks in license/permit fees towards the business community.

Get on board with renewable energy before the rest of the country does. Lethbridge could be a leader vs a follower. Huge business potential in this sector and a way to diversify our economy, secure jobs for our youth and address climate change at the same time.
