Lethbridge Public Library:
What do you see as the role of the public library in our community and how would you support it?

A

Burke

Answer

With the rise of mobile devices, the library has done an amazing job of becoming a hub for community resources in addition to the traditional context of borrowing books. The library sees a diverse group of our citizens using its resources for everything from toys and movies to accessing the internet to stay in touch, or research places for rent in our community. I believe that the library should be supported in its efforts to remain a safe and accessible place where barrier-free access is available to all. I feel that programs on community education as well as having the ability to connect individuals at the library with services will only strengthen an already amazing place.

Answer

Not unlike City Halls, Public Libraries are often the faces and gathering places of a community. Our libraries do an amazing job of being open, inclusive, and welcoming to every member of our community. No longer merely a place of books and reference materials, our libraries are an integral part of life and connections in Lethbridge. Our library is the information and referral source of community, health, social and government services and programs, and assists many of our residents on a daily basis. They create and provide excellent programs and volunteer opportunities throughout of city. I have always supported our local library through stable, predictable funding.

Answer

As their motto identifies, the roll of the LPL is about “connection YOU to ideas.” As with space dedicated to artistic expression, the LPL uses our two libraries (and bookmobile and special events) to connect residents to literature, which offers escape, expands ideas, promotes learning, and builds creativity. Library space also becomes a venue for exchanges of ideas, a place of solitude and safety, and a destination for education and entertainment. I would support the LPL by maintaining the programs that meet the Library Board’s Plan of Service and are experiencing a demonstrated success in our community.

Answer

It is essential that we have vibrant public spaces where all of our community is welcome and where we can gather, meet and have great discussions. We also need places where people can find trusted, reliable information and where they can learn how to access that information. Development of literacy skills is essential for our community. The Read-On program supports newcomers to our community. These are some of the vital roles being played by our public library. There are many ways to support the library including continued funding, advocacy and sharing with the public the changing and growing roles of public libraries in our community

Answer

Public libraries are very important focal points and resources for a community. When we think of libraries, we often only think of books, but in the 21st century public libraries offer so much more. They offer access to the internet for a multitude of purposes, educational programs, entertainment, meeting space for community groups and events, and public service initiatives. Both of our public libraries and programs like the Bookmobile, are vital to this community and council should support them as much as possible. This would include direct financial support for programs, and to work together with library personnel to provide the services our community needs.

B

Answer

The role of the public library is vital to any/all communities and ours is no exception. An educated populace is vital to the fabric of the community and all people must be given access to library services which continue to evolve to keep pace with current trends. I would support the library by promoting its many programs and vote in favor of acquisitions and facility upgrades as the need arose over the course of time.

Answer

The public library is essential. The library is more than books, but also offers many other services and programs that ultimately add to the knowledge and culture of our city. The public library is not only a place of knowledge, but also a safe space for every person in the city to gather. Unfortunately, the library is often underappreciated by the public. Encouraging the public to read and be part of the library is a support I can personally offer, and as Mayor, ensuring that the library can continue and grow while maintaining the rich documents that fill the shelves is definitely within the interests of the People. I've mentioned informed democracy several times, so I'll let you assume it.

Answer

The Public Library's role has gradually changed from simply "lending out books" and is likely to continue to change and take on other functions in the coming years. For many in our community the libraries provide services ranging from ad hoc social-work to navigators. They can provide help to people in researching and figuring out local resources and issues about life, such as navigating the health system, or helping those with housing needs. Library programs and events can be designed to highlight "this “go-to” role... with libraries providing advice and connections to health, housing, literacy, and other areas." (M. Cabello & S.M. The Lethbridge Public Library is all about Connecting You to Ideas!  The Main Library (located in the heart of our downtown), The Crossings Branch Library in West Lethbridge Centre, our Bookmobile and our 24/7 virtual library, all of which connect us to many services. Our libraries offer so much more than books. If you’re looking for something to do, the Library offer speakers, forums, music presentations, symposiums, art exhibits, film festivals, information sessions, current events, Writers’ cafes and so much more.  Children’s programming is also available. The library is the one place where anyone can go and take advantage of their services regardless of income or station in life. It should be a gathering place for people to gain knowledge and connect with people. I am on the library board and have seen them raise their profile over the last couple of years with various programs and initiatives to keep people coming back. While some may believe that public libraries are becoming obsolete, there is no denying that they are still paramount in being open access to information.  Especially now in a time where the focus of education is put a lot more on independent learning, the library is a fantastic resource for students, and the community at large.  Many libraries even host events like story hour for children, study groups for students, and book clubs for young and old alike.  I believe the library is an important resource for our residents, and could  commit to supporting it's growth and retention in any way I can.

The public library (all three) are an essential part of having an educated and literate population. The opportunity to borrow books, cd's, movies etc. along with being able to read/browse at the library is important to the community. The programs offered by the library are important in the community and offer pre-school children the opportunity of early literacy, a place for connecting with other children in a support setting. The library also allows for students, residents and professionals the opportunity to research and study in a quiet and supportive setting. I would support the library by ensuring at reasonable and adequate funding is provided through municipal resources.

The role of the public library is to promote literacy and continuous learning. It is a community resource for the public of all ages. It serves to stimulate thinking and ideas.

J

Answer

The library goes far beyond promoting literacy and education. It is a critical hub for so many organizations and groups in this city. It is a place for ESL students to learn and connect with new friends and neighbors. A place for groups like Pridefest to host events supporting the community. A place for families to gather and spend a day. A place for forums and meetings. Downtown is the heart of our city but without a doubt our libraries are a very large piece of our soul. The city should not only support financially but through the continued promotion of events & opportunities. I look forward to finding new and exciting way to further the support of our libraries.

Public Library is key in our community. The library offers a meeting place, a learning place, a community centre, outreach, and so much more. Answer

The public library is able to provide a space where people come to interact, learn, work, and of course read! It removes accessibility barriers for people who may not otherwise have the materials to succeed. As well, the library provides excellent opportunities for low and medium income families to create lasting memories through their diverse range of programs for adults and children. I would support initiatives and policies that will allow the library to continue to develop and serve the community's needs.

D

Answer

At the height of our digital information age libraries often fight to stay relevant. The Lethbridge Public Library has in the past and continues to engage the public in a meaningful and interactive way through it's many projects. The key to relevance is being open to change, and the library demonstrates daily that it can do that. Promoting the events and activities that the LPL provides for the community is key to its maintenance and growth.

Answer

Our Library is public space for higher knowledge; there to provide and promote the enjoyment of reading and literacy. It’s also a place for community information events and film festivals. I want it used for what its intended for, not a place for drug dealers.
